When Peace Breaks Out (“Peace”) is a story about individual courage, struggle, transformation and the waging of peace. “Peace” focuses on the life of Aqeela Sherrills, a young man born in the projects and into an environment of extreme gang violence and social disintegration. Through Sherrills’ strength of spirit and work on his inner wounds, Sherrills transforms himself and then, the rest of his community toward a peaceful path. He creates a peace movement that takes over the neighborhood and paves the way for the historic gang truce between the Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles. He becomes known as the “Gandhi of the Ghetto,” but he doesn’t stop there. The story ends with Sherrills continuing to wage peace in the neighborhood through his community center as well as taking his message of peace abroad to war-torn areas like Ireland and other international conflicts like Bosnia.
“Peace” is a powerful story about the reality of personal, human suffering and healing, both on the individual level as well as at the community and international level. The time for “Peace” has come.
