Tree Media Group has worked with the Council on Foreign Relations since 1999. Our collaboration with the Council has resulted in the creation of eight websites for public and private use that includes an online content management system for the think tank.
In 1999, Tree Media Group met with the Council on Foreign Relations to discuss how the web and digital tools could support their work. One of America’s most prestigious think tanks, the Council on Foreign Relations was founded in 1921, and is dedicated to increasing America’s understanding of the world and contributing ideas to U.S. foreign policy. The Council accomplishes this mainly by promoting constructive debates and discussions, clarifying world issues, and publishing Foreign Affairs, the leading journal on global issues.
Tree Media Group’s work with the Council has allowed them to extend their work, helping them to connect to the public and build relationships with other media outlets that further enhances their reach to audiences across the country. As a first step, the CFR engaged Tree Media Group to build a private, online discussion area for US, Russian and Eurasian stakeholders on the subject of the Caspian Sea and the Caspian Sea oil pipeline to Ceyhan, Turkey. Our second project, Campaign 2000, had a mission to enhance the public’s understanding of foreign policy during the 2000 presidential elections. The site was a success and received rave reviews: Diane Sawyer, of ABC News said of the site “Finally, the facts at cyberspeed. Just when the campaign rhetoric leaves us starving for what is real, what is researched and what matters.”
The central website of the Council was our third engagement and the most important. The site is entirely dynamic and displays the content of a repository of the Council’s content that numbers in the tens of thousands of documents. To help the user access relevant content, the site is organized around issues and regions. At almost every click, the site searches the database to bring relevant data into the webpage. There are several layers of administrative control to content administrative backend that then allows multiple site managers to maintain the website remotely.
Tree Media Group built an XML database for publications for the journal Foreign Affairs in addition to the content management system in place for the central site. Tree Media Group also encodes and streams the
Council’s public meetings as well as manages and streams live webcasts.
